About Nu au Chale Vert

Henri Matisse, Nu au Chale Vert (1921-1922) displays the artist’s signature flair for color. Using bold reds, both from the furniture that the model is lying on to the wallpaper in the background, Matisse depicts a nude woman, stretched across the canvas, with a green piece of fabric resting just below her waist. During the 1920s and into the 1930s, after Matisse moved from Paris to Nice, he focused much of his energy on these odalisque paintings, depicting women in various states of repose.
“What interests me most is neither still life nor landscape: it is the human figure” said Matisse.
